The building seemed a newer construction, and smelled of fresh cut oak when Jascha opened the double doors that were solid and stained a reddish-brown. They stepped into the vestibule and its silence held them. The building was square and not large, but adequate for a small village. Light came from stained-glass windows within the main chamber, which was open to them, and rowed clerestory across the nave of the roof. A beam of sunlight streamed into the rear of the chamber onto what appeared a bare table, without cloth or candle; and beside it knelt the girl they saw earlier. Jascha insisted they wait.

Andro studied her from across the room. She appeared statuesque, illuminated by the sun, but innocent and beautiful. As still as an angel in a painting, she startled him when she suddenly turned. So I don't spoil the first book I won't really go into the plot of this one very much. There is a very cool new character introduced that helps to guide the group on the proper path and Leonin meets more of his people.

The book continues on the same path as Part One. It is very well written in the style of a truly epic fantasy world. James continues to use vivid descriptions to give a true feel for the environments that the group travels through. This is a great series for fans of books such as The Lord of the Rings.

<link rel='related' href='http://www.amazon.com/Passage-Acolyte-Part-Two-ebook/dp/B004QS998G/ref=cm_aya_orig_subj' title='The latest review! All is still and darkness settles in. The first flakes fall. And I'm burnt out. Sad but true, I hit a wall, and that's not too alarming, but this is prime writing season. I set aside time every Christmas for seasonal activities and very importantly -- writing. Yes, in the past the words flowed like an avalanche to fill my pages with awe and wonder, and I look for it to happen again. But that wall thing comes at a bad time. The time for my blitzkrieg of writing nears. What am I to do?

First thing first. Set those goals: I hope to be at 50% by New Year's. By then I will have hit that sweet spot in the middle of book three where the table is set and the setting takes a hard change. I plug away, but more sporadically than usual. I am anxious to read this novel through, but for now I just want to get it completed. Then it is on to revising and a desperate attempt at a glossary. (sorry folks, the names and new characters aren't letting up any time soon) A glossary will be a God-send for the reader.

What to anticipate? More snippets, for sure, from the new and the old books. And as things get closer for the new release, I am looking into offering book one for free on Kindle. Until then, both books one and two are still only $0.99. I hope it's worth a look. Season's Greetings everyone!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://passageoftheacolyte.blogspot.com/2011/12/tis-season.html' title='Tis' Nice to have a chance to drive east into the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania for the much anticipated Ligonier Days. The perfect day trip with fall splashed all across the hills in many colors. I always love that visit -- Fort Ligonier, the parade, shops, food and music. Town is closed off for several blocks to all but pedestrians, and good times abound. Stay as long as you like, or until they throw you out. Did I mention the food?
This was also a fine time to visit Second Chapter Books, (find them on Facebook), where my novels rest comfortably on a middle shelf just to the right of the cash register. I was happy to learn of a september sale, and it makes me wonder how they enjoyed it. (Comments people!) Thank you again to everyone who has taken a chance on "Passage of the Acolyte."
And another mention to Red Barn Books in Greensburg, Pa. They are as friendly as can be, and overflowing. A new section is in the re-modeling stages...and they love Indie Books.

Just a little something...

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto;

Over two thousand participants awaited their turn to best their opponent before king and countrymen. They huddled as those at attention, known and unknown, of varied ages and backgrounds – journeymen, foreign born, and common brawlers. Within their ranks stood men of notoriety who gained fame in battle or past tournaments, and these too arrived from across the northern realm.

The warriors stood fast at the blowing of a single horn upon the dais. Armond took a proud stance among the combatants, raising his right hand in the air in unison with the others, repeating the words of oath called out by the judges present: “For honor and service! To King and Country!”

The tournament was set – elimination down to the last man. Blunted weapons were doled out: swords, axes, spears, and wooden shields. The judges kept order and awarded victory at their determination of any blow of certainty to the head, neck, or heart. Eleven rounds separated the beginning rabble down to the one champion. The first two rounds, called ‘the weeding out,’ cut the number down to five hundred, eliminating the less deserving. Armond had no desire to join in their number.

In the end came the Champion’s reward: two thousand forty-eight silver krones gathered from the fighters prior to the festival as presented by the king.

Sharp-edged spears pushed the participants to the edge of the circle. Armond took a seat upon the grass to watch as a spectator until called. Pairs were singled out, dozens at a time, and after hasty instructions, judges dropped their hands and the melee began. Armond witnessed a clash of arms: the fray appeared a clumsy orchestration as fighters stumbled and rushed, slashed and conquered. Some lay bleeding, bruised, moaning in pain, or red-faced and angered over a sudden loss. The melee continued. As one pair finished, another fight began. The arena was now awash with dueling combatants; the dust roiled and the crowd kept up its loud chorus. The winners of the first round received a white feather – the losers, jeers and a quick exit.

Armond glanced over his shoulder searching for his friends in the assembly, but the faces were many and noise drowned out their voices. After some time, an eternity in waiting it seemed, a large man in a traditional white tabard approached.

“You there – here!” he commanded, pointing Armond to a position upon the grass.

“And you, hurry it up,” he called to another in wait.

An odd fellow lined up opposite Armond. Rangy arms tensed with hands folded at his waist and sweat beaded upon a cleaned-shaven head – the man looked strange even in Nordhiem.

“Choose!” bellowed the judge. Two young retainers stood near holding two swords, an axe, a spear, and two shields. Armond took a firm handled sword, its edge smoothed away, and a wooden shield. His opponent chose the second shield and a spear.

“Line up,” called the judge once again. “The fight ends when I say, or my spearmen will end it for you. My judgment is final – now fight!”

With a drop of his hand, the contest began. Armond felt a flame surge in his heart, but it was met by the distraction of a roaring crowd and forty other fights going on simultaneously in the forum.

“Come boy, see what I have waiting,” challenged the adversary, his accent thick and clever.

“Odd again,” thought Armond, his mind drifting. “Is he Noldarin? Perhaps from the western flanks…”

A sudden attack ended the curiosity as Armond blocked a spear thrust with his shield. The man returned with slashes and drives, keeping him on the defensive. He came quickly on the attack, skilled with his weapon. Crouched low with spear in left hand and shield upon his right, he squatted ready to strike. Armond lunged forward hacking with the sword, but his blows were blocked and countered. The exchange continued until the man found an opportunity and swept low as if to strike a leg; then with a sudden dip and a deft twisting maneuver, he managed to get behind Armond’s shield from below, blocking with his own shield and stabbing upward towards the heart. Armond reacted instinctively. He spun away from the near victorious strike, and with both shields knocked aside, struck a sword blow to the neck of his opponent. So sudden it came and it was done. Armond looked on as the strange man writhed in pain upon the ground, hand clutched upon a throbbing neck.

“The Victor!” called the judge. He raised Armond’s hand above his head. He was given a white feather and walked back to where the victorious sat, waiting for round two. His opponent sent away cursing.

30,000 words...finally

Is that the end of the tunnel?

30,000 words...finally. Steely Dan has no place on a fantasy blog, but when I took this picture at Tappan Lake, Ohio (a little ways west of Pittsburgh) I couldn't help thinking of the line: your everlasting summer, you can see it fading fast; so you grab a piece of something that you think is gonna last...

Dang, it's true, we all do that. It is August now and summer is fading right quick. At some point we learn to let go...usually when the October wind turns, then the switch comes on. We'll be ready. Right?
And how does this pertain to writing? I'll tell you. You better hold on to that piece of something that will last, because snowflakes might be falling, but if you are writing about summertime, it makes no difference -- those words better be dripping with swaying breezes and lemonade. Happy writing, whatever the season.

Time to stop...

Sometimes it is a good thing to stop and let nature take its course. No matter what you are doing, get your head out of the sand, work, TV, or whatever, take a breath and smell the flowers. Created things are there for the taking, figuratively speaking, while we worry about our phones and gadgets. Just a break in the action can be enough to recharge and put life in perspective. It's a simple thing, like a walk, even in the backyard, to clear the mind, heart, soul. Makes for better writing too...

Compartmentalization

House Bayne -- Chapter Four, Book Two

Seven syllables, 21 letters, and no spell check needed, (believe it!) compartmentalization is an important word for writers. Compartmentalization means, to divide into sections or categories.
Bland enough. But what I'm talking about is that divide between a writer's life and and their composition.
I once read a book on writing, I believe it was by Sol Stein, where the author stressed, if you write fiction and are merely retelling your life story, you are writing for self and not the reader. (autobiography aside)

I believe there is a fine line between writing for public appeal, and writing for me. Unless your story is intended for the mass-market Wal-Mart crowd, you want to balance the two.

Even more, compartmentalizing enables you to write despite outside influences. I told you once how I wrote part of my book during a tropical storm in Florida, and in even worse times. I did not let these events affect the story, unless it was a way to 'be inspired' and add a plot twist or two. A better way to illustrate; if you read the biographies of J.R.R. Tolkien or J.K. Rowling, you might find their Fantasies were nothing like their personal lives. They each had their unique influences, such as,

Tolkien's experiences in World War I and laying in a sick bed from Mustard gas, but all in all, their stories had lives all their own.

I only say this because I often wonder how other writers do it. There are distractions, disasters, and demons to keep our lives sputtering along, and the temptation would be to write these events into the storyline. But is it a good idea? I look at world politics, and am tempted to influence my created world structure in some way, but I must resist -- or else I've written a allegory. That's my advice. Do what works for you -- happy writing.

<div style="display: inline !important; I imagine few books capture such a sight adequately as the shifting fronts on Ormond beach that June day. (well, maybe Genesis) That's always the challenge: impart the feeling only nature can give. I think Tolkien did it very well, and even Jane Austen when she set up a chapter. I believe it requires a bit of patience and trusting in the words -- AND re-writing. Not every storyteller composes with nature's perspective in mind, but as you can see by the picture, what a setting for a fantastic chapter. Happy reading and writing...

Creating in retrospect

I was pretty happy to see that Kindle sale of Book One the other day, because it had been a while. Just to think some stranger is reading my work is a dream come true, and it offers me a sense of responsibility. People want their money's worth, and time is money. I have to think my efforts, although not perfect, (hence the four-stars out of five) will be worth the time for fans of epic fantasy. It is when the non-fantasy reader enjoys my story that it really confirms I did something right.

Maybe that is the lesson for newbie writers like me -- not everyone is going to like your story, but a surprising few others will. But even here it gets strange. I feel like that painter that paints, but his/her works rarely sell and sit in piles about their studio.
People ask me how many books have sold, and I have to say, I don't really know.
A bunch through Createspace; some through friends and family; and even those unusual sales my mom seems to dredge up from perfect strangers. I've signed more books than I'd like to admit; family and people I know, mostly, and it is strange and humbling, but mostly cool.

Back to the painter thing. Although relatively unknown, that painter goes on. There's more stuff to paint; more beauty to create. And readership or not, my story goes on. My time with Andro Rhine and gang is far from over. Join in the fun, if you like; and like I say -- immerse yourself.

Vacation memoir....

Not my usual blog. Been back a week from Daytona. Nice trip. Drove again -- 4th year in a row. (my poor car) Did not have a computer, so I didn't write a thing. I can't get back into the pen and notebook thing; I much rather type it out in front of me. Took a day or two, but I kick-started and got the story moving again.

Okay, enough ranting. Here are some important discoveries on the drive from Pittsburgh to Daytona (via Atlanta): first of all, beat this record; we saw four, count them, four areas of tornado damage that crossed the highway. One in Virginia, and three in Georgia, all in the same drive! Here's a less important fact. Driving north on I-95 into Georgia; there is a welcome center (rest stop) at the border, then nothing for 120 miles, except for the ever-pleasant gas station rest rooms. Thank you, Georgia. Okay, I'm still ranting.

Here's a strange observance. Saw only one alligator, one lizard, and hardly any bugs (they are worse in Pittsburgh). Nice job, Florida, but you might want to cut back on the pesticides. (I like lizards)
As you can see, travel is in my blood. So when I wrote my first book(s), it had to involve travel...hopefully not in a boring way.

So everyone, enjoy your summer!

Latest review

4.0 out of 5 stars An epic journey has begun, June 5, 2011

By

Scott (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Passage of the Acolyte: part one (Volume 1) (Paperback)
Passage of the Acolyte by James Vargo has a lot in common with the Lord of the Rings series. He has created an epic world filled with a variety of countries each with their own political alliances and prejudices. I will admit that I had a little difficulty keeping all of the characters and their regions straight at the beginning of the book, but I was good by the end.

They journey starts out when Greynol Arowen gets a letter bearing a terrible seal from a son that he never knew existed. Unfortunately that son seems to be extremely evil and aims to take over the world. Greynol picks up a group of young men who are looking for their first adventure away from home. He is reluctant to bring them on what will no doubt be a dangerous journey, but they are able to prove themselves worthy. Arowen sets out to confront his son bringing the group of young men along for the ride.

Their adventure is filled with richly detailed landscapes and a variety of challenges. There are many ghosts from Arowen's path, good and bad, that must be confronted along the way. Will everyone survive to reach their destination with such immense odds stacked against them?

The only criticism I could have for the book is that at times the pace really seemed to slow down with all of the detail given. I'm sure that is actually a positive to some readers, but it did take away a little bit for me. Still an excellent story overall and I look forward to reading the second book (which I have waiting to be read). Keep an eye on James Vargo if you enjoy truly epic fantasy because he can write an amazing story.

So far, so near

Not unlike the arched corridors of Merthanir House in Larin (Book One chapter 10)

How do you make time? I'm not one to give speed writing advice, although I am getting better at putting the words to paper. But how does one find the time; even more, a place to write. Okay, time is subjective -- some have it, some don't. But place? I'm not talking about that spot in front of your computer screen, or if you're lucky, a laptop somewhere in the wilderness. What I am referring to is that place you go that enables you to think of the extraordinary and write about it.

Let's face it, we all have issues to deal with. And when worldly burdens get you down, or way distracted, (i.e. when the dog bites, when the bees sting...) you can't so easily put yourself in middle-earth, Tatoonie, or Westeros. Unless you write for a living, you often have more pressing things to do -- it's reality. So you find the time, sit in front of your computer screen, and despite the latest personal calamity, go there and write.

At least that's how I do it. Having a structure in place helps. Know where you are going next works even better. It takes some of the creative burden away so you can just -- write. And I have found myself writing in some not so idea situations: Christmas' away from home in my sister's house with family all around; in Florida a few years ago during Tropical Storm Barry; and sadly enough, even the night my dog died. What else can you do? Just write! (Janalyn would be proud)

the first 10,000

Spring at Castle Rohbir in Norhiem

(I actually don't know where this is, but I like it)

The first 10,000 words of the next book are in. Anything but settled, they roll along in a wordy string of explanation, question, and amplification. In other words, the story continues. 10,000 words is not much in terms of a novel, and in a series, it's just a blip; but it's a nice goal to share. I gotta admit, waiting for reviews to roll in is trying and unnerving. So far, I'm the king of Four Star reviews. (could be worse) Still not sure if my book(s) have what it takes to be likable, readable, or something worthy of song. (such as Led Zeppelins' Misty Mountain Hop) Well, I can dream.

Truth is, I like my story, like what I'm writing, and how it is written. (grammar aside) It is a style I want to improve upon, but I do enjoy it. Does that make me sound weird or conceited? I know my novels aren't for everyone, and I feel a little embarrassed when a friend or family member picks it up to read...and it's like 'what the heck is this...'. Fantasy isn't for everyone. But I do believe there is an audience out there -- just a matter of finding it.

I find today's trends don't help. People today are into the immediate response, quickie gratification, cram in on my Kindle and get on to the next book. It's hard to believe folk read at all anymore. The modern trends are for the urban-fantasy written in comic-book fashion. This is all fine and fun, but not what I want to do. I think someone out there still reads the classics and craves for the substance of a deeper prose. Writing is the art, even just 10,000 words in.

Inspiration

The plains of the Werithain (early book two)

{actually, it's near Lancaster, California...never been there, but it looks nice}

Where does one get inspiration today. Sometimes it's all doom and gloom out there, and the news pushes every bit of information to make life seem...well, horrible. No wonder people write fantasy. Inspiration is required, and for me it comes easily: a beautiful photo, a great song, a warm spring day, most Sundays in general. And then, if I'm lucky, I write.

Not sure if my books will ever be widely read, and that's a scary thought; but I sit down, wonder if it's worth it, then look and the page and want to go on. I look a picture, or recall a place I've been, and write or create, whatever name you give to art. God made things beautiful -- why can't I.

Book three is started, although book(parts) one and two can be read independently, and it will be slow going. The fiery creature, which made several troublesome appearances in the first volume, attacks them once again, forcing them from their intended road. A legendary path becomes an escape route and an introduction to a most interesting figure.

Their newly found, but very ancient friend is a strong, wise, and earthy character who not only helps them on their way, but through his conversations further develops Vargo's world, fleshing out more of the back-story. Additionally, the conversations and settings allow the reader to finally get to know Drago and Zerrin who come into their own in this volume.

The party comes to the end of their fascinating detour and joins with a party of warriors from Nordheim led by Baric the Tall, no stranger to the reader, who had also set out for adventure in the south in the previous volume. The two parties join, affording each party certain travelling advantages, but most importantly affording Vargo ample opportunities to introduce several new characters to advance the story line, as well as to develop his main characters via some rather opinionated interactions between the two parties.

The city of Rintar, royal capital of the war torn kingdom of Fanael, is the setting for a series of plot elements, including an important and eventful Fawarran liturgical ceremony, an introduction to a new and unexpected adventurer, further exploration of Greynol's faith, and some surprising events which shake the party up with associated plot twists.

The action eventually moves to the neighboring and secretive country of Asenrael. Asenrael is rather quickly introduced to the reader, and it seems that there is quite a rush of information packed into the several chapters dealing with the events taking place in and around this intriguing realm. Perhaps the sense of being overwhelmed with the fast paced descriptions of events in Asenrael is intended to mirror the wonder and confusion felt by the party of northern outsiders who find themselves plunged into the quickly moving world of a hidden kingdom swiftly being overtaken by war. In any event, I wonder if Vargo might have tempered the pace here a bit.

In the very heart of Asenrael and at its darkest hour, Greynol, Fauglir, the undead Ragulon, King Halphun of Asenrael, Halphun's opposition, and the Alliance and their friends all play out their fates and set new ones into motion. Vargo nicely brings to a close Greynol's quest while leaving open a number of plot hooks for (hopefully!) future stories.

Vargo's epic has it all. Ancient powers slumbering in abandoned temples, mythical mines, legendary creatures (both friend and foe), swordplay, and magical duels are enough to satisfy any "fantasy" addict, but what sets it apart in my mind is the pervasive human element. Vargo, while utilizing the fantastic, bases his story around people - people with everyday lives, hopes, and dreams, people who enjoy good food and sleep when they can get it, who rise above their fears when necessary, and having risen above their fears to look dread evil face to face, still can find it difficult to muster the courage to speak openly to those that they love. Even his most "magical" race in his world are finite and human and can be related to by any reader. Above it all, his world is permeated by a hope that transcends his world's humanity, entering into it via people like Greynol and those whose hearts are good, and in the end testing and perfecting their humanity.

A few more typos to be found in this volume than in the first, but not enough to be distracting.

I certainly hope we have not heard the last from Mr. Vargo concerning his world!

Indie Publishing, meet Indie Bookstores

Yep, the slow grind of self-marketing continues, and the spiderwebs keep growing...so lookout. Took a trip into Northwestern Pa, and it really is God's country. Found some wonderful bookstores; and yes, they knew I was coming. Despite the cost of gas, I feel really good about seeing my books on actual shelves. I'm nowhere near done with this, and sooner than later, will hit the bigboys (B&N, books-a-millon, Borders, ect) and they all have their requirements. Actual paperwork. Yuck. I'll let the Indie thing take hold first.

The most noticeable thing about these Indie stores, without exception, are the friendly people that work there; owners usually, and a cat or two. And lots of good conversation. Funny how book-lovers make such nice people. Rosie's in DuBois had comfy outdoor furniture, inside; and it was so nice when the owner, Sherry, invited us to sit and chat. Mary at Book Nook in Punxsutawney was a wealth of information. And Kathlyn, who owns the incredible Erie Book Store, (please visit if in the area) has also one of the most famous cats in Erie County. Then Werner Books in Erie is also a wonderful store with a large local writer's section.

I haven't even mentioned some earlier visits; Penguin Books in Sewickley (west of Pittsburgh), Red Barn in Greensburg, (it was really a barn...I think), and the quaint Read's Ink in Vandergrift...and another cat. This was the unexpected part of my book ventures -- the nice people I meet.

I have to say it. Folk like writers!

New Review

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; We are immediately introduced to the main character Greynol, a retired cleric who receives a disturbing message from lands far to the south. The message, in the form of a scroll, mysteriously unsealed and literally cursed by blood, calls the elderly Acolyte out of his comfortable situation and into a redemptive quest.
Rather quickly, the reader is then acquainted with a group of young men, friends and kin from the lands of the north of Vargo's millieu, all coming of age and looking for adventure and deeds to prove themselves. A chance encounter eventually leads them to Greynol who is looking for an escort to the south where he can confront his past.
Greynol's companions, seven in number, are from various clans and races (human ), each of which has a particular history which Vargo skillfully reveals in conversations and events during their travels together. It is clear that the author has spent a lot of time and effort into building his world and creating a coherent mythos in which his story is a part. Several very nicely drawn maps are testaments to Vargo's world building endeavors, unfortunately it appears that some have been necessarily cropped to fit the format of the publisher. Vargo's vivid descriptions of the landscape through which the party journeys are evidently the result of his own wilderness wanderings and meditations.
Their journey is not without perils - bandits and ancient temples test the party's mettle. A shadowy assassin keeps the adventurers on their toes and is responsible for a particularly desperate encounter. There is also a mysterious and fiery being dogging them with sinister intentions. Through all of the dangers, Greynol calls on and uses the powers of Fawarra, which "... act through those who empty themselves the most ..."
Near the end of the volume is a wonderfully described fight scene which is resolved by a maneuver which will always stick in my mind and finishes off Part One of Vargo's tale with the party playing the role of local heros.
Vargo does indeed manage to evoke feelings of Tolkien, I think in a large measure due to his characterizations (rather than relying on typical fantasy races such as elves and dwarves, he embeds his human characters with traits and histories which accomplish the same results) and interwoven backstory (though at time a bit too heavy) to his world.
I've always had a particular fondness for the passage in "The Hobbit" where Gandalf calls to Bilbo to ".. just bring out the cold chicken and pickles!" Vargo does not neglect the fact that adventurers need to eat, and though he sometimes describes their meals in a perfunctory manner, more often than not his depictions sent me scurrying to the kitchen to find something which would firmly cement the passage in my memory.
His sparing and judicious use of "magic" makes its appearance all the more satisfying and the Fawarra religion which permeates his world really is a treat. Not since Katherine Kurtz's "Camber of Culdi" have I enjoyed a fantasy novel which had a world spanning religion organically and effectively embedded in the story in this fashion. One small gripe - I can't help but associate the term "acolyte" with a beginner or minor liturgical functionary, which Greynol clearly is not.
I think that Mr. Vargo does indeed deliver (so far!) what he promised. Onto Part Two ...

Kindle Sale is on (in case you missed it)

$0.99 For my first book on Kindle. Call it a Pre-Easter sale. This is the story of Greynol an "Acolyte" (a sort of holy man). Greynol has lived for decades in a quite life of contemplative retirement when he is pulled back into the real world by a dark secret from his past- one that may have dire consequences for the world.

The Acolyte thus must gather a small group of escorts for his quest across the continent, and ends up with a group of eager young men.

In many ways, I found the tale so far quite evocative of The Fellowship of the Ring. Don't get me wrong, there's no attempt to copy LotR ( no hobbits, etc), and it's not up to Tolkien's writing level (who is?), but still, there is a sense of the Fellowship here.

I quite enjoyed it. Not a lot of magic or combat, but just enough of both to add a sense of wonder and danger. The world is beautifully described, too. And, it has several nice maps, and we all know how much I like maps in a fantasy novel. Nice character growth and a slow building of what we know about Greynol, too.

There's a few missteps, of course, such as one would expect from a new author. Names are a bit confusing, as is all too common in fantasy books. To an extent, same with the different peoples. What would be a good addition is a glossary with a short character bio and info about the various people, nations, etc.

Still, those are quibbles. I am very much looking forward to the rest of the series.

I rcvd a copy of this book for review.

(NOTE FROM ME: I'M LOOKING FOR MORE REVIEWS. CONTACT ME, I'LL CUT YOU A DEAL ON THE BOOK(S) )

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://passageoftheacolyte.blogspot.com/2011/03/my-first-review-wow-these-can-be-scary.html' title='My first review. Parts one and two have arrived in the mail, and yes, there are errors. Mostly formatting issues, but I am going to make other changes. Not to worry, should not take too long....days instead of weeks, months, years...ect.

The overall design looks good for both. The blues of part one versus the orange hues of part two -- I like the contrast. plus Dulac's artwork, as you can see on the blog, look good. By far the hardest thing I've had to do. And with my bad timing, submitting book one early in the wee hours of December 31st, Createspace is closed until Monday. Another wait.

And yes, I said book one, because at nearly 700 pages, (it is an Epic Fantasy afterall) the story had to be split in two. Author critics are worth their weight in gold, and this one in particular did a great job of spotting confusing parts, mistakes and weak structure. And I thought I was almost there.

Re-write, re-write, re-write, that's old advice. Then it's time for polishing. I thought that was it.

The next step is the hardest one of all -- perfect. The adage, 'show don't tell', comes into play here, and I may never fully understand it.

I'm also debating posting that 'Prelude' for the rare few that may read this post. Greynol Arowen is an Acolyte and 'Sage of Idarill', that is, if you consider the last half of his eighty years. In his begrudged retirement, Greynol should have enoyed his last years in repose; but a message arrives at his door, an invitation of sorts that reopens the mystery of his younger life. Once a swordman, champion and husband of Aliane, since lost to the enemy, Greynol discovers the past hid a secret beyond all reckoning: enslaved by a merciless enemy, his wife bore him a son. Forty years later, Fauglir, wielder of dark magic and minion of Illutar, the enemy of all fair kingdoms, claims to be that son. His offer is one of invitation and challenge...

Welcome

Now it begins.

Actually, it began when I was about 12 years old. A Rankin-Bass cartoon called 'the Hobbit' came on television, you may have heard of it, and from there the fantasy genre had a new fan.
